BackStellar Begins $18M Renovation on Historic Naval Hotel
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 24, 2016) — Stellar, a firm providing award-winning construction management at-risk, design-build and general contracting services for a range of commercial and public sector markets, has started a $18-million renovation project on Herrmann Hall, a lodging facility at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. Herrmann Hall originally opened in 1880 as one of America’s top luxury hotels before being requisitioned to the Navy at the beginning of World War II and purchased in 1947.
Stellar will demolish rooms and support areas on two of the hotel’s 20,000-square-foot floors to completely renovate and modernize guest rooms and bathrooms. Last designed in the 1980s, the guest rooms will receive a clean, but historic, 19th-century look. The hotel’s historic corridor will remain preserved.
Stellar will be abating all asbestos and lead-containing materials to create a healthy building for guests. The renovated building will receive a high sound transmission class (STC) rating. From the basement upward, Stellar will also:
- Install unit heaters in guest rooms
- Install custom flooring / carpet
- Install light fixtures
- Re-pipe the building

Construction is expected to be completed in June 2017.
Funding for the design and construction of this facility is paid for with U.S. Navynon-appropriated Funds (NAF) provided by CNIC & Navy Region Southwest.
