Stellar Hires Mike Chapman as Director of PSM Compliance and Technological Solutions

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (August 24, 2017) — Stellar, a fully integrated firm focused on design, engineering, construction and mechanical services worldwide, has hired Michael A. Chapman as its Director of PSM Compliance and Technological Solutions.

Chapman will lead Stellar’s Process Safety Management Team, which provides compliance solutions for clients including audits, process hazard analyses, mechanical integrity inspections and corrective action support. He is also tasked with developing advanced technology to enhance refrigeration operator/technician training to increase awareness and understanding of ammonia hazards, and to teach best practices in system operations and maintenance for accident prevention to ensure safety.

Before joining Stellar, Chapman served Tyson Foods, Inc. for almost 17 years. He spent his last 10 years as the company’s Program Manager for Process Safety and Risk Management Programs for all 100+ U.S. locations.

“This valuable in-house experience gives Mike perspective and relatability when working with our clients,” said Brian Kappele, Executive Vice President, Food & Beverage Facility Services. “He understands their needs and where they’re coming from, because he’s been in their shoes.”

Prior to Tyson, Chapman worked for the state of North Carolina’s Division of Air Quality where he led the chemical accident prevention program. In addition to his food manufacturing and government regulatory background, Chapman understands the importance and consequences of industrial safety firsthand: He has been a volunteer and part-time firefighter for 24 years.

Chapman is a certified hazardous materials specialist, instructor and internationally accredited Fire Officer. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) and is a Master Instructor with the Ammonia Safety and Training Institute (ASTI).

“Stellar is the platinum standard in the food and beverage industry. I was familiar with the firm and its reputation for high-quality work before coming aboard, so it’s an honor to be here,” said Chapman. “I’m excited to grow and develop a talented team that shares my passion for safety as it relates to the safe use of anhydrous ammonia in industrial refrigeration.”

Chapman holds a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He lives in St. Augustine with his wife and three children.
